Strengthening Practice: Together, We Create!
January 3, 2019 - February 1, 2019
In light of Tapp’s focus on its cultural entrepreneurship incubator program (CEIP), we are delighted to announce the launch of our January program/exhibition. Throughout January, Tapp’s will turn the gallery into a fluid forum of discussion and reflection and allow artists from all stages of their careers to display their work and invite feedback from the community. Tapp’s staff will be on hand as career coaches to discuss long-term and short term planning as well as additional critical feedback, if solicited.
All visual artists are welcome to participate in this month-long event regardless of their professional art experience or background/education in the arts. Participation is free and open to the public. Input from the entire community is welcomed and encouraged. No formal preparation is necessary for participating artists, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view throughout January.
Peer critiques allows artists to externalize compositional and conceptual thinking, changing the platform of self-reflection and fostering activation from a community of practice. Tapp’s wants to build this community of peers to strengthen Columbia’s creative class by providing a central space to develop a collective critical analysis of art by sharing of discoveries about art and the human condition.
We want a serious (but fun) reviews. We don’t want to tell people that their artwork is ‘pretty’, or ‘interesting’ (we know we’ve got a whole city of talent already), we want to challenge artists to push the boundaries of their creative practice. We want artists to be charged with a spectrum of emotions by the end of this project [anger, lust, determination, inspiration, happiness…], so that in four weeks, they are inspired to make something in which we can really sink our teeth.
*This was formed in an effort to foster community, possible collaboration, but most importantly, peer review. You do not have to show work to participate, but we do want you to be active in the discussion so your impression matters.
