Songversation Presents singer/Songwriter, Michael Miller

Michael Miller has been writing songs for fifty years. He is an oil painter, a composer and arranger, a folk singer and a recording artist. He has eclectic tastes in music and art. He has written for many different styles of music, from Rock to small classical ensemble, to electronic music. He has had his electronic music played to a concert audience at USC’s School of Music, where he studied classical guitar. Miller has played in rock & roll bands in the late 60’s and early 70’s. He played in coffee houses with acoustic guitar duos and trios throughout the 70’s. He performed at the Air Force World Talent Contest. During the 80’s and 90’s he was the lead vocalist in rock, beach and R&B bands at venues across South Carolina. He was a founding member and president of the, now defunct, South Carolina ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers).

His career was in educational video and multi-media production, and the marketing of those productions. He has been a classroom teacher in K-12, university and continuing education settings. He was the video/media producer for Richland County School District One, a writer and developer for SCETV; one of his educational programs was a finalist in the New York Film Festival. He was then Director of Marketing for SCETV, and went on to be the Director of Marketing for Coast Telecourses in southern California. He was president of the Telecourse People, a national consortium of telecourse producers and distributors. He closed out his career as Coordinator for Instructional Systems Development at the National Center for The First Year Experience based at the University of South Carolina.

 

The performance at the Tapps Arts Center will present what he calls his “parlor songs”, songs you could sit down and enjoy playing in someone’s living room. He will share his thoughts when writing the songs, and, in general, the compositional elements he feels are key in communicating with this art form.
